Raccoon Lake

Context

Earlier this year, the Ontario Geographic Names Board named a  lake in Peterborough County Raccoon Lake. Raccoon Lake replaces the previous name which was considered offensive and derogatory.

Offensive names are removed from government databases, maps and publications.

Since then, the Board has received two new name proposals for the lake and is looking for input from local residents, businesses, First Nations and organizations to determine:

  1. If there is support for the name Raccoon Lake
  2. If there is a preference for one of  the other two name proposals
  3. If there are any other known names for this lake

The Board recognizes that this proposal is unique so please reach out to geographicnames@ontario.ca with questions or for assistance.

Location

Located within the Geographic Township of Burleigh, Township of North Kawartha, County of Peterborough. Parts of the West edge are situated within Kawartha Highlands Provincial Park.

Origin

Little Burleigh Lake: locally used name prior to 1952.

Esban Lake: Ojibwe for raccoon.
